Northern Berg

The northern Drakensberg is characterised by deep valleys, long sections of vertical escarpment walls and several prominent, free-standing pinnacles. It has a rugged harshness that contrasts with the gentler – but by no means less spectacular – central and southern regions. Its most noticeable features are the bowl-shaped Amphitheatre in the far north, and the Cathedral Peak range at its southernmost limit. Between these, on the escarpment, are the North and South Peaks of the Saddle, and Mponjwane. Some distance in front of the latter are the free-standing Inner and Outer Mnweni Needles.
