The central Drakensberg consists of seven wilderness areas although one (Hillside) is closed to the public. Some of these areas are quite small and do not butt the escarpment. Injasuti and Loteni have the greatest contrast in height between their entry points and the escarpment, making for some seriously challenging hiking. The highest point in South Africa (Mafadi, 3 450 metres) is on the escarpment above Injasuti Hutted Camp.
