Route Planning

As a hike leader, there are many factors you need to take into consideration when you start planning a hike. The simplest option in the Natal Drakensberg is to follow a marked trail, whether it is a multi-day one like the Giant’s Cup Trail, or a simpler one within the vicinity of a hotel or similar resort where you often have access to pamphlets with sketch diagrams of recommended walks.

The next option is to plan a route that will make use of well-worn paths – at least according to the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife maps available for purchase at major entry points. Be aware, though, that many of the more distant paths are not being maintained or patrolled by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, so never assume that following them will always be easy. Paths are marked as “major, “minor” and “ill-defined ways to go”, but these classifications can change drastically depending on usage, vegetation and time of the year.  New game trails and smuggling routes not shown on the maps can cause confusion by appearing to be the paths you want to follow but in fact are not. A hike leader must always monitor, check and confirm progress along the planned route and not be distracted by new paths.

The final option is to make your own way to where you want to go, using marked trails and existing paths where these will assist your progress, but otherwise going “off-piste” where the need arises. This “bundu-bashing” option often requires greater effort and therefore fitness and endurance, so it is not suited to groups that include young or unfit members. It is also far more demanding on the leader’s navigational skills, especially in poor visibility.

Hike leaders are usually goal-oriented and will have their sights set on a specific cave, hut or camping area to overnight at, taking in interesting landmarks en route. The primary purpose of this website is to provide enough information to assist you in planning a safe and successful hike. We do not provide GPS tracks except for passes because we don’t want to limit your creativity. Go wherever your imagination takes you, and enjoy the experience in the company of other like-minded folk.
