Pillar Cave Annex

Pillar Cave Annex

Image 1 of 1

Location:

Garden Castle Wilderness Area, lower southern Drakensberg.  This series of small caves, formed in a red bed on the side of the Mlambonja River, is located slightly up-stream and on the opposite side of the river to Pillar Cave.  Together they offer a drier and friendlier environment than Pillar Cave, but very little privacy since they lie on the main route to Mashai Pass.  Crossing the river from Pillar Cave to reach these caves may prove a little tricky in summer, when it can be flowing deep and fast just above a waterfall.

Description:

The caves are all quite small but will accommodate a total of up to 8 people fairly comfortably.

Comfort:  3/5

The sleeping areas are fairly level and their low roofs and the surrounding boulders and trees impart a feeling of cosiness.  However, during the day the area upstream from the caves becomes a thoroughfare for day-trippers and hikers going up and down Mashai Pass, so don’t expect any privacy!

Water:  4/5

The Mlambonja River flows past just below the caves and is fairly easy to reach.

Pools:  3/5

There are several small pools in the river within easy walking distance of the caves.

Shelter:  2/5

The caves are mostly dry and dusty and the overhang and surrounding boulders and trees provide adequate shelter from rain and wind.

Outlook:  2/5

The caves do not offer much of a view, being tucked behind several large boulders and some bush.  However, a short excursion out of the caves will afford an awesome view of Rhino Peak and Mashai Pass.
