Bathplug Cave is sheltered by yellowwood trees.

Location:

Cobham Wilderness Area, lower southern Drakensberg.  Bathplug Cave is not marked on the new maps of the area, but it does appear on the Slingsby and the original Giant’s Cup Trail maps.  The cave lies just off the Giant’s Cup trail between the Pholela and Mzimkhulwana trail huts, about 4 km from the former.  The walk from Cobham involves a fairly lengthy climb before passing the Tortoise Rocks, and offers some fine views of the Cobham area.  Bathplug Cave is closed to campers.

GPS Coordinates:

History:

Water which flows over the lip of the main overhang trickles backwards towards the rock face and then disappears underground via a large hole like a bathplug.  In winter, water trickling down the waterfall to the side of the cave also disappears underground for a short distance, although in summer there is a sufficient volume of water to disguise this fact and it appears to all flow out of the pool as one would expect.
