Rock Art

The Bushman paintings of the Natal Drakensberg are one of South Africa’s greatest cultural treasures. Over 20 000 individual rock paintings have been recorded at different sites between the Amphitheatre and Bushman’s Nek. Their location is not publicised. If you wish to visit some of the larger sites, you will need to do this in the company of an Amafa-accredited Rock Art Guide from the local community. Some exceptions are sites that have already been heavily vandalised.

Backpacking enthusiasts cannot avoid all the rock art sites and are expected to treat them with the utmost respect. It is a criminal offence to interfere with rock art in any way, and those responsible for such actions can expect heavy fines and even prison sentences if they are caught. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife game guards do frequent patrols to check on rock art sites, and Honorary Officers report back on their condition too.
