Twins Cave Annex

Location:

Cathedral Peak Wilderness Area, northern Drakensberg just below the escarpment.

GPS Coordinates: WGS 84

S28 56.992 E29 06.687 at 2844 metres (Landlubbers)

Description:

The cave can accommodate a maximum of 6 people. It is not on the list of bookable caves. It is a worthwhile alternative to Twins Cave for a small group, especially if the latter has been inundated with hikers trying to escape bad weather on the escarpment.

Comfort: 4/5

The two sleeping areas are almost level, but headroom is limited. Some low stone walls help protect the occupants from inclement weather.

Water: 1/5

The nearest running water is about 1 km from the cave – either down Mlambonja Pass or in Lesotho. The poor availability of water is the cave’s main drawback, although those accessing it from the escarpment can easily manage to bring all their water with them. In summer there is a fairly reliable trickle over the lip of a cliff on the contour path to Twins Cave Annex, about 50 metres from Twins Cave.

Pools: 0/5

There are no good pools within easy walking distance of the cave.

Shelter: 3/5

This cave is very close to the Cathedral Peak range, which bears the full brunt of the forces of nature. Driving rain and snow may enter the cave, but it probably offers better shelter than Twins Cave under these conditions.

Outlook: 5/5

On a clear day the cave provides an excellent view along the Cathedral range, from the Twins to Cathedral Peak.

Overall Rating: 13/25
