Mponjwane Cave

Location:

Mnweni Reservation, northern Drakensberg escarpment.  The cave is at the top of the escarpment, but set back from the edge by about 100 metres with a gentle slope in front of it.  There are some spectacular viewing spots close by.  Hikers who suffer from vertigo will find this a far more homely cave than Ledges Cave.  The nearest pass to the cave is Rockeries Pass, but Mnweni Pass is another possibility.  The routes to these passes from below the escarpment involve a very long walk through the densely populated Mnweni location.

Description:

Mponjwane Cave can accommodate 8 people comfortably.

Comfort:  4/5

The cave is divided into two areas, both of which are near perfectly level.

Water:  0/5

There is a small stream (the source of the mighty Orange River) about 1 km behind and below the cave.  Hikers should collect as much water as they can before heading up to the cave from this direction.  The approach along the escarpment provides little or no running water in the dry season.

Pools:  0/5

There are no good pools within easy walking distance of the cave.

Shelter:  4/5

The cave should provide adequate shelter in most weather, and lightning should not be as serious a danger as at Ledges Cave.  However, it is inadvisable to approach the cave from any direction during an electrical storm.

Outlook:  5/5

The cave offers interesting views, but there are also spectacular viewing spots within 100 metres of the cave in any direction.
