Location:

Injasuti Wilderness Area, lower central Drakensberg.  Fergy’s Cave is conveniently close to the Parks Authority’s Injasuti Hutted Camp over a relatively level, good path.  This is an inviting route for new backpackers or those with young children they would like to introduce to the activity.  Beware of the Njasuthi River crossing in summer though – this can be dangerous and you should far rather take the alternative route over the road bridge instead under these conditions.  The cave is open (or closed) according to the whim of the local Parks Authority officer, so you will need to enquire about its status before you start laying any definite plans.  Battle Cave is less than a kilometre away, but you will need a game guard as a guide and the entry fee is high for those looking for a cheap weekend away from home.  Enquire at the camp office if you are really interested, or buy postcards of the paintings instead!

Description:

Fergy’s Cave is nicely situated on the banks of Mbovaneni River, which winds its way interestingly down the valley.  The overhang is large and the cave is recessed behind some trees which provide some protection from the wind.  Accommodation is restricted to 8 hikers (when it is open).

Comfort:  4/5

The sleeping area is level and smooth, but a bit dusty or muddy.

Water:  5/5

The river provides a reliable source of water all year round.

Pools:  4/5

There are some nice small pools upstream from the cave, with good bedrock to stretch out on.

Shelter:  4/5

Due to the large overhang and its location behind some trees near the bottom end of a shallow valley, the cave provides good shelter.  It is west-facing and receives the setting sun.

Outlook:  2/5

There is not much of a view from the cave and you will have to walk a considerable distance uphill to see anything spectacular.
