Location:

Cathedral Peak Wilderness Area, lower northern Drakensberg.

GPS Coordinates: WGS 84

Unknown

Description:

Xeni Cave is a large, deep, parabolic overhang with a huge flat floor area which could easily accommodate 30 hikers or more, so there is more than sufficient space for the maximum of 12 that is allowed. The floor is made entirely of sandstone bedrock and is therefore mostly smooth.

Comfort: 5/5

The sleeping area is perfectly flat and smooth, but is usually covered in a fine layer of dust.

Water: 2/5

A small stream runs past one side of the cave in summer, but in winter this usually dries up and the nearest water source is then the Mlambonja River, which is a considerable height below the cave.

Pools: 0/5

There are no pools in the immediate vicinity of the cave.

Shelter: 5/5

Because of its depth, Xeni Cave provides excellent shelter from both wind and rain.

Outlook: 4/5

The cave offers a good view across the Mlambonja valley, and parts of the escarpment can also be seen in the distance.
